To gain insights in the industry, Truescope delved into the social media conversations and online news surrounding maritime and shipping from  10 Sep 2024 -  10 Mar 2025.

Data revealed that KMG competitor, Hapag-Lloyd, led the SOV, with 26.2%. Furthermore, it displayed online news channels (91.2%) as the main platform where the companies were discussed.

The analysis highlighted significant maritime and shipping bodies such as the Kuok Maritime Group (KMG) (12.8% in the SOV), composed of four entities, namely PaxOcean, PACC Offshore Services Holdings (POSH), Pacific Carriers Limited (PCL), and McPEC.

Although the companies gained predominantly neutral sentiments due to online news mentions, it can be noted that favourable sentiments were driven mostly by sustainability initiatives, news of profit growth, and collaborations.

2. KMG’s Entities in the Media

Among KMG’s entities, PaxOcean dominated the SOV with 43.2% (202 Mentions, 7,274 Social Engagements). On the other hand, POSH generated 37.6% (176 Mentions, 3,051 Social Engagements), while PCL occupied 12.8% (60 Mentions, 4,223 Social Engagements) of the SOV, and McPEC took up 6.4% (30 Mentions, 2,679 Social Engagements).

PaxOcean received the most number of positive mentions, fuelled by the keel lay of the first fully electric tug at PaxOcean Batam, Indonesia. The milestone was received favourably, with netizens congratulating the Group. On the other hand, neutral mentions were driven by the announcement of PaxOcean’s completion of repair and reactivation of the Basrec 2.

POSH’s positive sentiments stemmed from being awarded a Subsea Umbilicals, Risers, and Flowlines (SURF) installation contract in the Arabian Gulf. Netizens expressed congratulatory remarks towards the offshore marine services provider. Meanwhile, neutral sentiments were brought about by apparent POSH offshore jobs in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ireland, and India.

PCL’s favourable mentions may be attributed to signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), together with PaxOcean and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), to collaborate on developing retrofit strategies. Netizens expressed their congratulations towards the initiative. On the other hand, neutral mentions can be attributed to collaboration with Access Singapore for their Pathways Programme to showcase career opportunities in the maritime industry.

McPEC’s favourable mentions were driven by being part of Singapore Maritime Week 2025,  which netizens have shown interest in. Meanwhile, neutral sentiments stemmed from apparent job opportunities at McPEC.

Across the dry bulk shipping industry, Hapag-Lloyd led the conversation with 49.4% in the SOV (952 Mentions), driven by news of the Gemini Cooperation Agreement between the German company and Maersk. Filed with the Federal Maritime Commission, the agreement allows companies to share vessels in the trades between the United States and Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Berge Bulk received the highest Engagement Rate (8,237), brought about by mentions of being a key industry player focusing on time charter rates, cargo holds, and fleet optimisation.

PCL garnered the highest Positive Sentiment (81.7%), fuelled by the signing of an MoU with PaxOcean and the ABS to collaborate on developing retrofit strategies.

In the offshore marine solutions industry, Diamond Offshore Drilling dominated the conversation with 31.6% in the SOV, fuelled by news of its acquisition by Noble Corp PLC. PaxOcean obtained the highest Volume of Positive mentions (9 mentions) on 5 Nov, brought about by KMG’s Diwali greeting. In total. PaxOcean received 89 Positive Mentions.

POSH garnered the most Volume of Positive mentions on 5 Nov, with 61 mentions. This can be attributed predominantly to the company obtaining the SURF installation contract. POSH garnered a total of 131 Positive Mentions.

Berge Bulk gained the largest number of Volume of Positive mentions on 5 Feb (111 Mentions), driven by mentions of being a key player in the dry bulk shipping industry, as well as reports of the sector being projected to grow by $3.60 billion from 2025-2029. Meanwhile, Norden garnered mostly neutral sentiments due to news mentions. Oldendorff received the highest Volume of Positive mentions on 15 Nov (5 Mentions), which can be attributed towardsnews of the chemical tankers market being poised to reach $60.92 billion by 2033. It can be noted that while Oldendorff is primarily a dry bulk shipping company, they previously owned and operated a chemical tanker through their subsidiary, Eships. The shipping company garnered a total of 7 Positive Mentions.
